Shown here as quarter sliced, Butternut is typically a species that is flat sliced.  It is also known as white walnut, and in fact is a part of the genus: Juglans.

Small pin knots and color streaks are common in this species.  The wood itself is very soft.  Only special logs are sliced for decorative veneers.
