Debuting several years ago at a European trade show, the texture is actual raised and recessed.  The process happens at the slicer, where serrated knives and pressure bars are used as the veneer is being sliced.

In this example we see a quartered oak, with a little flake figure in the background.  Because of the raised and recessed parts of the diagonal texture, the stain, one applied and wiped off, leaves a unique patina.  The stain of course is custom and can be any color of your choosing.
