General Information:
Redwood is a species indigenous only to the Western US from Southern Oregon through a large part of the Pacific Coast. This species is reported to be the tallest species of tree on the planet, and there are some examples more than 600 years old.
Most of what we see in veneer and lumber is wood that has been extracted after storms or forest fires. The soft, silky texture of the veneer can be very demure in appearance or can have a wild fiery, figural appearance to it.
The burl is typically below the soil line, although some examples are found up in the tree, appearing as odd growths on the trunk. In this example we see what is referred to as Vavona Burl. Vavona meaning veins.
