General Information:
The growing region for American Sycamore spans from the Southern Appalachian region over through the Ohio river valley and into the Mississippi river valley. The heartwood is a pale to deep amber color with the sapwood being close to white or pale yellow.
Like Lacewood and Oak (at times) Sycamore has a very strong medullary ray system that tends to yield a flake pattern when sliced. The flake can be large or small, as well as visually subtle to very intense and pronounced. The photo here shows not only a lighter version of the species, but also a different flake pattern.
Logs are typically quarter sliced because the inner heartwood of these trees can be hollow due to decay.
