General Information:
Brazilian Rosewood was highly popular with many designers we equate with mid-century modern. Whether in furniture design or room couture, this wood, along with others were widely used. They brought depth and interest to design in so many ways.
Although popular, environmental groups soon targeted this species, among others, as being decimated by the forest industry through over harvesting. It’s true, this species was in danger, but not from our industry, rather through slash and burn practices within the country of origin. You must remember, timber had little commercial value. Land for agriculture, economic development – not necessarily within that growing region, but exacerbated by development in other countries rendered the land more valuable than the trees.
Since 1972, this species has been listed on Appendix 1 of the CITES list and cannot be traded internationally. However, there are still gems of this amazing wood available, which were produced into veneer decades prior to that. Per the CITES, a certificate stating this must accompany the veneer if sold.
We appreciate your visit and hope to hear from you soon!
